As dance educators, we carry an incredible responsibility. We aren't just teaching choreography or preparing students for a spring recital; we are molding developing bodies and influencing the physical longevity of our students. We’ve all witnessed it: the frustrated student who works harder than anyone else but can’t seem to achieve a "perfect" line, or the competitive dancer who seems to be in a perpetual cycle of shin splints and "growing pains."

For years, the dance world relied on tradition and "the way it’s always been done." But the demands on today’s dancers are higher than ever. The athleticism required in contemporary and competitive dance is elite-level. If our training methods don't evolve alongside these demands, our dancers pay the price.

That is why I created the 2026 Virtual Dance Science Teacher Intensive. I want to take you behind the scenes of movement to bridge the gap between traditional technique and modern dance science.

Why "More Effort" Isn't the Answer

One of the biggest shifts in my own teaching happened when I realized that many "technical" issues are actually "mechanical" issues, not from lack of trying.

When a student struggles with turnout, our instinct is often to tell them to "squeeze the glutes more." But what if that student has a femoral neck shape that physically prevents further external rotation? In that case, more "squeezing" just leads to potential injuries like labral tears or a hip impingement.

By understanding anatomical individuality, we stop fighting a student’s bone structure and start working with their unique physiology. We learn to identify when a plateau is a strength deficit that we can fix - and when it’s a structural boundary that we must respect to keep the dancer safe.

The Pillars of the Dance Science Teacher Intensive: What We’re Solving Together

This isn't just a weekend of lectures; it’s a deep dive into the practical application of kinesiology and biomechanics for the studio floor. Here is exactly what we are going to tackle:

1. Precision Cueing: Speaking the Language of the Body

Have you ever given a correction and watched a student over-correct so much they create a new problem? We’ll explore how to use external vs. internal cueing to trigger the right muscle firing patterns. We’ll move away from vague imagery and toward language that helps a student’s nervous system understand exactly what is being asked of it.

2. Injury Prevention: The Science of "Prehab"

Injury prevention shouldn't be something we think about after a dancer gets hurt. We will discuss:

  • Hypermobility: How to stabilize the "bendy" dancers who are often the most at risk.

  • Growth Spurts: Managing the "clumsy" phase by understanding how a dancer's center of gravity shifts during adolescence.

  • Load Management: How to spot the signs of overuse before they become stress fractures.

3. Strength & Conditioning for Artistry

We want our dancers to be powerful, but we also want them to look like dancers. I’ll show you how to integrate strength work that doesn't "bulk" or create tension, but instead provides the explosive power needed for grand allegro and the rock-solid stability needed for a triple pirouette.

4. The Anatomy of Turnout and Extension

We’re going to look "under the skin" at the hip complex and the spine. You’ll leave with a toolkit of exercises to help students safely increase their range of motion without compromising their lower backs or "gripping" their hip flexors.

A Virtual Experience Designed for Busy Teachers

I know that as a teacher or studio owner, your time is your most valuable resource. That’s why I’ve made this intensive 100% virtual. You get the highest level of professional development without the cost of flights, hotels, or time away from your family. You'll also receive 30-day access to the intensive replays in case you can't join live or you want to rewatch later.

When you join us on August 1st and 2nd, you’re getting:

  • Live Interactive Sessions: This isn't a pre-recorded webinar. We’ll be analyzing movement in real-time, and you’ll have the chance to ask me your most pressing "what do I do with this student?" questions.

  • Evidence-Based Resources: You’ll receive downloadable guides and checklists that you can keep right on your music stand or iPad during class.

  • A Professional Community: Connect with a cohort of like-minded educators who are just as passionate about the health and safety of their dancers as you are.

  • Your Very Own Teacher Workbook to take notes, find review worksheets, exercise hyperlinks, and more. Take a sneak peek into this year's workbook cover below!

Join the Movement Toward Smarter Training

The 2026 season is going to be here before we know it. My goal is for you to walk into your studio this fall feeling like you have an "X-ray vision" for technique - knowing exactly why a student is struggling and exactly how to fix it without causing harm.

Early Bird Registration is currently open through May 31st. By signing up early, you not only save on your registration fee, but you also signal your commitment to being at the forefront of dance education. Those are the kind of teachers that are going to truly make a difference.

Let’s stop guessing. Let’s stop repeating the same corrections. Let’s start teaching with the precision and confidence that our dancers deserve. I can’t wait to see you there!

P.S. If you have a group of 5 or more teachers and want to register together for a discount, please click here to find our group registration page.
